This pā — also known as the "L-shaped pā" — saw the first shots of the Taranaki War on 17 March 1860. Colonial soldiers enforcing the survey of the Waitara block demanded Te Kohia's surrender, but were met with armed resistance. The pā was stormed by colonial forces the following day, who found it abandoned.
The area is now covered by a tennis court and adjoining orchard, with a modest sign next to the court marking the site's historical significance. Although the site has been purchased by the New Plymouth District Council, as of February 2026 development plans are on hold.
