Puketapu memorial cross

The Puketapu Cross Memorial marks the site of the August 1854 ambush that ignited the Puketapu Feud. Rāwiri Waiaua, a Puketapu chief, and his followers were attacked by a group of men from their own hapū, led by Waitere Katatore. The conflict arose over a dispute regarding land sales to Pākehā; Waiaua's party supported the sales, while Katatore's group vehemently opposed them. Those killed were reportedly buried at this site.

The concrete cross is accessible from the roadside. It was erected in 1941 to replace an earlier wooden cross, parts of which are now held at Puke Ariki.
