After a several months of sapping operations in late 1860 and early 1861, British forces began approaching Te Ārei pā with a sap still clearly visible in the ground. The pā was of greater significance to Waikato Māori who had won a famous victory over the Taranaki tribes in 1832 and were reluctant to abandon the position. The threatened seizure of Te Ārei may have partially motivated a ceasefire, after which peace terms were agreed in April 1861. The war would resume two years later.
