The Howick stockade, situated on the vantage point now known as Stockade Hill, was constructed in mid-1863. Built by British troops and the local militia, the fortification was designed as a place of refuge for the residents of the Howick Fencible settlement amidst fears of attack during the outbreak of the Waikato War.
Although the site never saw combat and its timber defences and corrugated iron buildings were eventually removed, the substantial perimeter earthworks remain in good condition today. The defensive ditch and bank are clearly visible within what is now a public reserve.
