Queen's Redoubt

Queen's Redoubt was the launching pad for the Crown's invasion of the Waikato in 1863. Established in 1862 at the foot of Great South Road and north of Mangatāwhiri Stream — the Kīngitanga border — it housed several hundred troops in a very large fortification over 8000 m².

Over the subsequent 150 years the redoubt was gradually levelled and swallowed up by development until the remaining slice was acquired by the Queen's Redoubt Trust in 2001. Some trenches (apparently partially restored by the Trust) remain. Interpretation panels and an interpretation centre (open on Sundays) are now present at the site.
