Construction of St John's Redoubt began in July 1863, shortly after Governor George Grey launched the Waikato war. Located on an elevated rise east of the Great South Road, it was designed to protect the military supply line into the Waikato and to guard against any threat of attack on Auckland. As The redoubt could accommodate up to 200 men, though it remained a minor fortification and never saw active engagement.
The site survives as a legally protected heritage reserve administered by the Department of Conservation. Very little of the earthworks can still be seen on the ground.
