Māori Peace Monument

A stockade was constructed in Masterton by Pākehā settlers in 1869 amid rising tensions nationwide. It never saw conflict and was demolished in the 1880s. In 1921, a monument stone was erected on the former site by Taiawhio Te Tau and the Church of the Seven Rules of Jehovah. It is the successor to a memorial stone originally erected in 1861 at Te Ore Ore marae, which related to the prophecies and covenant of the chief Paora Te Potangaroa.

The memorial is accessible from the roadside in Queen Elizabeth park.
