In the immediate aftermath of the the Wairau incident in June 1843, settlers in Nelson — a New Zealand Company settlement — erected a stockade to secure the township. The site is now taken by Christ Church Cathedral and little remains of the fortification today besides a minor bronze plaque. Some traces of the earthworks may survive in the edges of hill surrounding the cathedral.
