Christ Church, Russell

Musket ball damage sustained by the Church during the destruction of Kororāreka in March 1845. Wikimedia

Christ Church/Te Whare Karakia o Kororāreka was constructed in 1835 and witnessed the destruction of Kororāreka in 1845 at the outset of the Northern War. Scars from the fighting are still visible in the form of bullet damage to the exterior of the Church.

The graveyard also contains several memorials linked to the Northern War:

  • the headstone of Tāmati Wāka Nene, a staunch Crown ally during the Northern war who was buried in the grounds of Christ Church in 1871
  • an obscure memorial commemorating Kororāreka residents who died during the town's destruction at the opening of the Northern war in 1845
  • a headstone marks the grave of six seamen of the HMS Hazard who died during the battle for Kororāreka in the same battle.
