The Upper Hutt Blockhouse was completed in 1860 in response to fears of Ngāti Toa raids. The building never actually saw conflict, though it was well-prepared for one: the exterior walls were filled with gravel to absorb incoming rifle fire and cut with loopholes (small holes) to allow its defenders to return fire.
The Blockhouse is very well preserved and today sits on the grounds of Heretaunga College. It is accessible through Heritage NZ.
