This modest concrete cross marks the grave of around 40 Māori fighters who died on 23 January 1861 with a ill-conceived predawn raid on No 3 redoubt, part of a line of sapping fortifications developed by the British. The taua was unable to scale the fortress' parapets and were repulsed by the British, who suffered only a handful of casualties.
