Tāmati Wāka Nene was a major rangatira and ally of the British against Hone Heke during the outbreak of the Northern War of 1845. After the close of the war, the Government paid him an annual stipend and built him a small cottage on land in Kororāreka set aside for the purpose.
The land is now on the grounds of Russell Museum. The cottage was demolished in the 1950s.
