During the sack of Kororāreka in 1845, the town was defended unsuccessfully by a range of British forces, including the ship HMS Hazard and several stockades armed with various guns, including this cannon which had been mounted below Flagstaff Hill sometime between 1840 and 1845, when the town was attacked by Hone Heke.
The cannon is now mounted in front of Russell Town Hall.
