Camp Waitara

Watercolour of the camp at Waitara in 1860 ATL

In March 1860, British troops established Camp Waitara to enforce the sale of the Pekapeka block over the objections of Te Āti Awa leader Wiremu Kīngi Te Rangitāke. Governor Thomas Gore Browne intended to survey the land under martial law, if necessary, leading directly to the outbreak of the First Taranaki War.

Little trace now survives of the camp.
