The Camphouse

The Camphouse on the slopes of Taranaki Maunga — said to be one of the oldest corrugated iron buildings in the world — was originally erected as prefabricated barracks on Marsland Hill in 1855, serving as headquarters for British regiments during the Taranaki Wars. When the barracks were demolished in 1891, this section was transported to the mountain as tourist accommodation. The corrugated iron panels retain gun slots cut into some sheets.

The Camphouse continues to operate as DOC accommodation.
