On 6 November 1860, a taua led by Ngāti Hauā rangatira Wetini Taiporutu was intercepted by a large force of up to 1,000 British and colonial fighters. Their fortifications incomplete, Ngāti Hauā were badly defeated with around 50 killed, but minimal casualties on the British side. Most Māori dead were interred at the site in a mass grave, but the more prominent rangatira were buried in New Plymouth.
The site is now a historical reserve managed by DOC accessible from the roadside
