Rangiriri cemetery arch

Rangiriri cemetry contains the remains of 41 enlisted men, casualities of the British attacks on Rangiriri in 1863. (Several dead officers were interred in Auckland.) Due to poor upkeep in the late nineteenth century, the precise location of the graves has been almost entirely lost, and the government erected a memorial monument in their place in 1927. The location of the Māori dead is unclear: according to NZHistory.govt.nz, 41 were interred in the trenches at Rangiriri immediately after the battle, but it is suspected that many were exhumbed and reburied at Mt Taupiri or the appropriate urupā.
