Mission cemetery

A view of the cemetery and the first memorial in around 1865 Alexander Turnbull Library

The Mission cemetery contains the remains of around 100 British troops and 14 Māori buried during and after the 1864 Tauranga campaign. The site was named for its proximity to Te Papa Mission Station and stands on the former Ōtamataha Pā.

Several large memorials dominate the cemetery:

  • A memorial erected by 1865 to 26 imperial soldiers who died at Pukehinahina/Gate Pā
  • A memorial erected in 1909 to 25 colonial and imperial soldiers who died at Pukehinahina/Gate Pā, Te Ranga and elsewhere
  • A memorial erected in 1914 to Rāwiri Puhirake (Ngāi Te Rangi), who fought at Pukehinahina/Gate Pā and died at Te Ranga
  • A memorial erected in 1920 to Ngāi Te Rangi (Ngāi Te Rangi), who also fought at Pukehinahina/Gate Pā and Te Ranga
  • A memorial erected in 1964 (replacing an earlier wooden cross) to 10 British sailors and marines killed at [Pukehinahina/Gate Pā]
  • A memorial erected in 1997 to 14 Māori who died at Te Ranga on 21 June 1864
