Two British soldiers who died at Horokiri/Battle Hill are buried in a simple grave in the grounds. It took some 81 years for the government to erect a monument for Private Thomas Tuite and Leading Seaman William Roberts in 1927. In contrast, the only officer casualty from the engagement — Ensign Henry Blackburn — was conveyed all the way back to Wellington and buried in Bolton Street cemetery.
