Waihī Redoubt

Waihī is the site of a colonial redoubt, a military cemetery, and a 1912 memorial cairn.

Waihī Redoubt was established in September 1866 on the hill south-west of Waihī Cemetery, serving as the main colonial forward base during the south Taranaki campaigns of the late 1860s. The garrison was evacuated after the defeat at Te Ngutu o te Manu on 7 September 1868 and withdrawn to Waverley; the redoubt was rebuilt in 1869.

Waihī Cemetery contains burials of colonial servicemen killed during Tītokowaru's War, including Captain Frederick James Ross, killed during the attack on Turuturumōkai on 12 July 1868. A memorial cairn unveiled on 29 May 1912 records 27 names — almost all of whom also appear on the Normanby NZ Wars memorial, unveiled the same day.
