Te Rangihaeata briefly occupied a pā on this site in 1845 before withdrawing to Mātaitaua further east. The British then used the site to construct Fort Strode. No sign remains of either although some sources suggest middens can be seen dating to the earlier occupation of Ngāti Ira. The site is now a minor reserve with a plaque noting the area's more recent use as a camp for American Marines in 1942.
