Albert Barracks

The surviving section of the Albert Barracks wall next to the university library Wikimedia

Albert Barracks was constructed between 1846 and 1852 in response to fears of a Māori attack on Auckland following the sack of Kororāreka during the Northern War. Enclosing 22 acres, the fortification featured a 12-foot-high wall constructed by Crown-allied Māori workers.

As the military threat to Auckland subsided, the barracks were decommissioned, and the majority of the fortification was demolished in the early 1870s to make way for Albert Park. Today, a single 85-metre section of the original wall survives on the University of Auckland city campus. The wall formerly had a plaque which was removed in the 1980s after being vandalised. It was rediscovered during refurbishment of an adjacent building in 2023 and was donated to Auckland Museum.
