Te Kooti occupied this pā, built in the style of British fortifications, in 1869 during his pursuit by Crown forces after escaping from Rēkohu/the Chatham Islands.
Te Pōrere (lower) is a few hundred metres to the west.
This pā was restored by Heritage NZ in the twentieth century and its remnants are clearly visible in the landscape.
