Rangiriri was the site of a massive Kīngitanga fortification that stretched several hundred metres from the Waikato river to Lake Waikare. An intricate network of deep trenches protected the earthwork from assault.
On 20 November 1863 over one thousand British troops attempted to storm the pā but were repelled and began sapping operations. The following morning, after many of the defenders of the pā had escaped over Lake Waikare, a white flag was raised. British forces immediately (and controversially) seized the pā, to the dismay of the remaining Māori, who had wished to discuss terms rather than surrender outright.
The site was the subject of a major redevelopment in April 2022 accessible from Te Wharepu Road.
