After the seizure of Rangiriri by the Crown in 1863, British forces established a much smaller redoubt just south of the pā to discourage any effort to recapture it. After the conclusion of the war the redoubt was abandoned, but in 1868 fears of another war in the Waikato led Ngāti Naho rangatira Te Wheoro to re-occupy the redoubt on behalf of the Crown.
