Having surreptitiously outflanked the fortification at Pāterangi, on Sunday, 21 February 1864, over 1,000 British troops stormed Rangiaowhia, an undefended civilian village. In the course of the fighting, a whare with seven people inside burned to the ground, possibly deliberately. Descendants and some historians have described the actions of colonial forces as nothing short of murderous.
A redesigned lawn was developed in 2022 alongside a monument erected by Māori descendants of the massacre. Te Awamutu Museum has developed an interactive mobile tour that leads to the site and other points of interest in Rangiaowhia.
