Wars.nz is a map of the New Zealand wars, marking battlefields, pā, fortifications, memorials and urupā from these formative conflicts in Aotearoa's history.
Historical sites from this period can be difficult to find, especially those of greater significance to Māori than the Crown. Many areas of historical significance remain overlooked, and some have been lost or erased from the landscape altogether.
This map marks where to find historical places linked the New Zealand wars, and where to learn more about them. If you know of a place that should be included, please add it.
Although some sites have benefited from redevelopment and greater interpretation in the past 20 years, many more remain on private land. Others may be wāhi tapu. Respect and sensitivity are essential.
By default, the map displays the most important historical sites and those which are most interesting to visit (for example, because traces of earthworks survive or because a memorial has been built upon them). Enabling advanced mode in the layers control in the top-right of the map will display a wider selection of sites, including those which have been entirely built over, which have only an approximate location or which have an obscure background.
