Pioneer turret, Ngāruawāhia

The turret now sits at the Point, a public park Wikimedia

During the Waikato war in 1863, colonial forces used three gun boats, including the Pioneer, to control the Waikato river and ferry troops and supplies. The two gun turrets aboard the Pioneer were later given to Mercer and Ngāruawāhia, where it now rests at the Point, a park at the confluence of the Waikato and Waipa rivers. A modest interpretation panel is present at the site.
