Waiari pā

This abandoned pā was used as a staging post for a minor attack on bathing British soldiers on 11 February 1864. Six British casualties are buried under a nearby memorial. Charles Heaphy's participation in the skirmish subsequently earned him a Victoria Cross.

The pā is marked by three large horizontal trenches (said to be eight metres deep) visible by satellite across a bend in the river. The pā is on inaccessible private farmland.
