On 28 April 1864 Te Arawa fighers repelled a taua from the eastern Bay of Plenty that had been threatening Fort Colville in an effort to fight west towards the Waikato. In a major victory for Te Arawa and the British, a great number of the taua were killed. In response to the death of senior Te Arawa rangatira Tohi Te Ururangi, his widow executed the Te Whakatōhea rangatira Te Āporotanga.
