Moutoa, a small shingle island on the Whanganui river, was the site of major battle between hapū from throughout the Whanganui region on 14 May 1864. A group of Pai Marire adherents led by Mātene Te Rangitauira had travelled south intending to attack the town of Whanganui and were repelled by downriver Māori. Around 65 men died. Grateful Pākehā in Whanganui erected the controversial Pakaitore Moutoa Gardens memorial.
