Heads Road Cemetery was established in 1843 for the settlement of Petre (later Whanganui), with a Catholic cemetery opening across the road in 1853 and a small adjoining Jewish cemetery.
The cemetery holds a large number of military burials from the period in which Whanganui served as a garrison town, including casualties from the fighting at Nukumaru and Moturoa.
