Symonds St cemetery memorial

This minor obelisk was erected to the memory of around 80 British soldiers who were interred in Symonds Street cemetery in the 19th century without gravestones. According to NZHistory.govt.nz, they were likely buried here after dying in hospital.

The memorial was constructed by the Victoria League in the early 20th century in an effort to keep up the graves of the forgotten war dead, but the poor state of the cemetery means the obelisk is now difficult to find and hard to read. It stands between two pathways, a few metres to the south-east of the Symonds Street on-ramp among a clutch of other headstones.
