After forcing Māori forces to abandon nearby Te Teoteo pā, colonial forces established Whangamarino redoubt in August 1863 and trained long-range artillery on the distant Meremere pā.

A short historical walk to Te Teoteo's pā managed by the Department of Conservation is accessible from the base of Oram Road near the bridge over the Whangamarino river.
