Meremere was constructed by Kingitanga forces in August 1863 at the outset of the Waikato war. On 30 October, colonial forces launched an attack on the pā, calling upon several hundred troops landed from the Waikato river, two steamers — the Pioneer and the Avon — and heavy artillery from Whangamarino Redoubt to the north. The pā was rapidly evacuated and British forces seized the empty fortification on 1 November 1863.
The site is now maintained by the Department of Conservation.
