This redoubt was built by the Armed Constabulary several years after fighting ceased in Waikato in order to secure Pākehā settlers' control of what was then a military settlement named Alexandra.
The redoubt should not be confused with the similarly well-preserved Alexandra Redoubt south of Pukekohe, or the less impressive Alexandra East Redoubt a few hundred metres to the north.
