This minor fortification preceded the more impressive and similarly named Alexandra Redoubt just a few hundred metres to the south. The redoubt was built together with a third fortifciation, the Alexandra West Redoubt, a short distance across the Waipā river, in 1864 to support colonial forces in their invasion of the Waikato.
